2020 Community Grant Awards

REINS OF LIFE

Reins of Life wanted to create a Sensory Garden which would act as a transitional point for our riders, students and participants to take part in before and after lessons. Sensory activities can assist or stand alone as an emotional and/or behavioral self-coping practice when transitioning from one activity to the next.

“With the Community Grant from La Porte County Extension Master Gardeners, we were able to get some unique plants like Hosta, ‘Wiggles and Squiggles’! Pictured are some additional plants we purchased: three varieties of Hosta with native turtleheads, Gaillardia x grandiflora flower heads (so interesting as a ‘pop’ of color), lamb’s ear (perfect for a sensory garden) with iris, lemon balm with blanket flower in background. We bought several varieties of astible and coral bells for visual texture and tall slender blooms.

Not pictured but installed and complete are tile labels for the plants. We will also be adding DIY stepping stones and painted rock edging created by our students and riders.

We are in Phase 1 right now of re-opening. Once we have a larger flow of riders and volunteers (Phase 2 and 3) we will take photos of the garden being enjoyed!

Thank you again! We are so excited to have this new addition to the barn.”

Health and Wellness Ministry at Queen of All Saints Catholic School

The Health and Wellness Ministry at Queen of All Saints Catholic School used their grant to develop a shared community garden grown and maintained by the school’s 7th and 8th graders. The project provided hands on learning and development of a sustainable food source, growing food in their own church community, and hopefully guiding the younger generation to a better understanding of eating healthy and establishing a good work background while caring and maintaining the gardens. The pictures are from Phase I of the project. Phase II and III will expand the community garden.
