The Mission of the La Porte County Soil & Water District (S&WCD) is to “provide leadership, education, and technical assistance to empower LaPorte County residents to conserve and improve our soil, water and related natural resources.”
The La Porte County Master Gardeners awarded the S&WCD a 2023 grant for improvement of their Pollinator Garden, in front of the S&WCD building on State Rd. 2 in La Porte.
Their grant project included the following activities and schedule:
1. Mid-June (grant award): Purchased 200 #50 plugs
2. Mid- June to Early- August: Steady weeding and cultivating of garden with summer interns and volunteers
3. Fair Week: Moved 200 #50 plugs to gallon containers to “up” growth and save from drought
4. October: Planting with interns and volunteers
As with all pollinator habitat, the demonstration garden is a work in progress and stewardship activities (enhancement planting and adaptive restoration management) will continue over the course of the next three growing seasons followed by long-term monitoring and stewardship.
